Second day in Nuremberg and still bemused with the lack of fridges in hotel rooms. Fortunately the outside temperature is fridge-like so the drinks end up on the window ledge.
Went to the toy museum which I thought would be dull as dishwater however it was really good. Some amazing toys going back hundreds of years, some like ones I seem to recall playing with and others showing the history of toys of today. Note the "baby walker" in this old dolls house
Another old piece is this one which is very small as you can see from Nanna's hand. If you zoom in on the photo you can see lots of tiny figures and furniture inside. Incredible patience required.
So back to the xmas market. Nanna and Aunty Jan took a carriage ride around the old town. As horses and I don't get on I declined!
In the main square there is a "beautiful fountain" which was supposed to be on top of a local church but the people demanded that it be left at street level for all to enjoy. For reasons yet to be discovered there is a gold ring in the fence surrounding it and turning it three times supposedly brings good luck. Nanna and Aunty Jan both gave it a go.
One thing I have discovered at these markets is Magenbrot. Sort of like lamingtons except that instead of sponge you have spiced gingerbread and the coating is a spiced chocolate and icing sugar mix. Awesome!!
Also had some gluhwein which is way better than any I have tried before although I am still not a big fan. The mugs all have different designs with the town name and year and you get to keep it if you forfeit your mug deposit (about $3AUD)
We had lunch at a local restaurant that clearly doesn't have the same health and safety rules we do in Oz (unless this is the worlds smallest guide dog)
To one side of the market is a raised balcony which afforded this view of the whole market. At 180 stalls it is supposed to be the biggest in Germany.
Heading for Augsburg next as we go deeper into the freezer with a cold front forecast later in the week and temps dropping to -9C minimums. Good news is the forecast for Neuschwanstein castle is for 80% chance of snow. Will hopefully be picture perfect.
